Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)
Personal, Social, and Health Education (PSHE) holds a crucial role in shaping pupils' knowledge, skills, and qualities necessary for leading fulfilling, healthy, and secure lives, both now and in the future. Our curriculum encompasses a comprehensive PSHE program, which not only integrates with the mandatory Relationships Education and Health Education as specified by the Department of Education in 2019, but also extends to encompass economic well-being, career guidance, and personal safety, including risk assessment and management. Our PSHE curriculum is designed to foster the holistic development of our pupils, encompassing their spiritual, moral, cultural, mental, and physical growth. It equips them with the tools they need to navigate the opportunities, responsibilities, and challenges they will encounter in later life, as outlined in the Education Act of 2002.
Our pupils are taught about fundamental British values such as democracy, the rule of law, individual freedoms, and showing mutual respect and tolerance towards individuals with diverse faiths and beliefs, as well as those without religious beliefs. This cultivates an environment where children can acquire and exhibit the skills and attitudes necessary for active participation and constructive contributions to contemporary British society.
The PSHE curriculum also emphasises the well-being of pupils. At its core, this subject prioritises child safety, and it imparts knowledge on safeguarding, including the importance of online safety, in line with the Keeping Children Safe in Education 2023. At City Road, PSHE is taught in all year groups from Reception to Year 6 via a progressive curriculum. Children in Reception develop their personal, social, and emotional skills. These attributes provide a solid basis for Key Stages 1 and 2, as well as for success in later life. In Key Stages 1 and 2, we use the PSHE Association Programme of Study and the Relationships and Health Education programme that has been designed by Birmingham City Council in partnership with Birmingham schools. We adapt the schemes to suit the specific needs of our pupils, school, and the community. It adopts a thematic approach, covering three core themes throughout the year: Relationships, Living in the Wider World and Health and Well-being. Within each core theme, distinct topics are addressed in each half-term. Please see the attached overview for more information about what we teach in each year group.
